Parker University radiologic technology student helps save ER patient’s life

On Oct. 19, Parker University radiologic technology student Michael Rose performed lifesaving CPR on an emergency room patient who went into cardiac arrest during Rose’s clinical rotation at Methodist Richardson Medical Center in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas, Texas.

According to a Parker University press release, Rose was taking a chest X-ray of the patient, who had come to the emergency room after suffering a heart attack, when the patient had another heart attack. Without hesitation, Rose joined the medical team in delivering CPR to the patient, rotating with other staff to continue the procedure, and the patient survived.

It was the first time Rose had ever done CPR on a live patient.

Because of this experience, noted the press release, Rose encourages all students to take their coursework seriously, because you never know when you will need to utilize an emergency technique like CPR. Immediate, high-quality CPR, says the American Red Cross, can triple a patient’s chances of survival.

Parker University began offering its associate of applied science degree with a major in radiologic technology in 2015. Current CPR certification is a requirement for a radiologic technology student to be admitted to and remain in the program. CPR and other emergency techniques are also part of the coursework for students in the university’s doctor of chiropractic program.
