Parker University introduced a new member of the campus security team: Parker the security dog, the university’s first.
With his distinctive bright blue eyes and gentle nature, Parker, a Great Dane, is more than just a security asset; he’s a beloved figure on campus, bringing safety and smiles to students, faculty and staff, noted a Parker University press release.
How Parker became Parker the security dog
Parker University’s Head of Security, Pete Peterson, saw an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between security and the university community. Inspired by other universities and police departments that successfully implemented K-9 units, Peterson envisioned a way to make security officers more approachable while enhancing campus safety. After thorough research, Peterson decided a Great Dane would not only serve as a visible deterrent to potential threats but also as a gentle giant for students to engage with.
Peterson picked Parker from a litter of 25 puppies in Denison, Texas, at Hundeity Great Danes on March 18, when Parker was just three months old. What stood out the most? Parker’s striking blue eyes, Peterson said. Originally named Rocky, Parker responded much better to his new name — fitting for the university he represents.
Under the guidance of renowned dog trainer Stan Smith, owner of Iron Sharp K-9 and winner of A&E’s America’s Top Dog, Parker completed seven weeks of obedience training. Smith’s expertise, combined with the strong bond between Parker and Peterson, ensured that Parker excelled in his training. Parker will continue his journey with protective training early next year to make him even better equipped for his security role.

To celebrate Parker’s successful completion of obedience training, Parker University hosted a graduation party on Sept. 5 at the Parker University Student Activity Center. Faculty, students and staff came out to support their new furry friend.
The event featured a video recap of Parker’s journey, a demo from Smith, and a special cake for Parker from Three Dog Bakery. Parker was awarded his obedience certification, presented by Parker University President William E. Morgan, DC.
Parker the security dog has quickly become a campus favorite, not just for his working role but also for the joy he brings to everyone he meets. From students petting him during study breaks to his appearances at school events, Parker helps relieve stress and lift spirits with his friendly and affectionate demeanor.
In addition to patrolling the campus with the security team, Parker serves as a bridge between security officers and the campus community. His presence encourages students to engage with security personnel, fostering a safer, more connected environment.
