Wellness journaling: A practice for health, clarity and success

Encourage patients to incorporate daily wellness journaling into their health routine

In our fast-paced world, filled with constant distractions and demands, finding clarity and balance is more critical than ever. One of the most powerful yet underutilized tools for self-improvement is daily wellness journaling. This simple practice has been shown to improve mental well-being, enhance focus and even support physical health.

Even the most elite athletes, including legendary swimmer Michael Phelps, turn to journaling as a way to optimize performance and manage stress. In a recent New York Times article, Phelps credited his journaling practice as a critical tool for personal growth, saying, “Journaling has helped me process my thoughts and emotions, and it allows me to see things from a different perspective.” If someone who has mastered the mental and physical demands of Olympic-level competition finds value in wellness journaling, imagine what it can do for you and your patients.

As DCs, we focus on total wellness—mind, body and spirit. Encouraging patients to incorporate daily wellness journaling into their health routine can help them process pain, manage stress and take an active role in their healing journey.

The science behind wellness journaling

Studies show that expressive writing has numerous benefits, including:

  • Lowering stress levels and reducing anxiety
  • Enhancing mental clarity and decision-making
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Strengthening immune function
  • Providing emotional relief by allowing patients to release worries onto paper

When patients take the time to reflect on their experiences, they develop greater self-awareness. This awareness fosters better lifestyle choices, which in turn support chiropractic care and overall well-being.

How you can recommend journaling to patients

1. Use wellness journaling to track pain and progress

Encourage patients to document their symptoms daily. Have them answer simple prompts such as:

  • How do I feel today physically?
  • Where do I feel pain or tension?
  • What activities seem to improve or worsen my symptoms?

By tracking their pain and mobility over time, patients can see patterns emerge, helping them (and you) identify triggers and effective treatments.

2. Promote gratitude journaling for stress reduction

Stress is one of the biggest contributors to musculoskeletal issues. Patients who are constantly stressed experience higher levels of inflammation and muscle tension. Encourage a nightly gratitude journal—where they write down three things they’re grateful for—to help shift their focus from stress to positivity, promoting relaxation and better sleep.

3. Encourage mind-body awareness through reflection

Journaling about emotions can help patients recognize the connection between their mental state and their physical health. Ask them to reflect on questions such as:

  • What thoughts have been weighing on me?
  • How does my body feel when I experience stress?
  • What are some ways I can practice self-care?

By doing this, patients may start to see how emotional burdens contribute to their physical symptoms, reinforcing the importance of stress management strategies like chiropractic care, exercise and mindfulness.

4. Suggest journaling to set wellness goals

Goal-setting is a powerful motivator. Have your patients write down their health goals in a journal and create action steps. Some examples include:

  • “I will improve my posture by stretching for five minutes each morning.”
  • “I will drink half my body weight in ounces of water each day.”
  • “I will attend my chiropractic adjustment appointments consistently.”

When patients see their goals on paper, they’re more likely to follow through with them.

5. Incorporate wellness journaling into your practice

You can easily integrate wellness journaling into your patient care by:

  • Creating a simple journaling template for your patients to use
  • Offering a guided journaling worksheet to help them track symptoms, stress and progress
  • Encouraging them to bring their journals to appointments to discuss patterns you may notice
  • Recommending wellness journaling as part of a holistic approach to health, alongside adjustments, exercise and nutrition

Final thoughts on wellness journaling

Journaling is a simple yet powerful tool that can complement chiropractic care by helping patients become more in tune with their health. As Phelps has shown us, it can serve as a means for self-reflection, stress management and personal growth.

As DCs, we have the unique opportunity to guide our patients toward  pain relief as well as long-term wellness. Encourage your patients to start wellness journaling today—it could be the missing piece in their journey to optimal health.
