Compliments boost patient compliance and engagement

Mark Sanna, DC July 15, 2025

use compliments to boost patient compliance and engagement

We all can appreciate the importance of patient engagement in achieving successful outcomes.

Compliments are not just a way to brighten someone’s day; they can be a powerful tool to boost patient compliance and foster loyalty to your care plans. Let’s explore how you and your team can use compliments effectively to create a positive, patient-centered experience.

Compliments that count

Simple, genuine compliments can leave a lasting impression. For example, commenting on a patient’s outfit, hairstyle or smile can set a positive tone for their visit. But compliments go beyond surface-level observations; they can also reinforce a patient’s progress and commitment to their health.

Patients often focus on how far they still have to go rather than how far they’ve come. Use each visit as an opportunity to celebrate small wins. Did they improve their range of motion? Mention it. Have they been consistent with their home exercises? Applaud their dedication. When patients feel seen and acknowledged for their efforts, they’re more likely to stay on track.

Compliments during reevaluations

Reevaluations are a golden opportunity to combine compliments with education. Show patients their objective progress—whether it’s through improved posture, decreased pain scores, or better functional movement. Acknowledge their hard work and tie it to the goals you’re setting for the next phase of care. Patients who understand their progress are more likely to comply with the next steps in their treatment plan.

Many patients drop out of care because they lose sight of the bigger picture. Compliments during reevaluations remind them of their achievements and re-energize their commitment. Use this moment to celebrate their successes and reinforce the importance of continued care.

Celebrate milestones and decreasing visit frequency

A decrease in visit frequency is another excellent opportunity to celebrate progress. Patients should feel like they’re “graduating” to a new stage of their care. Celebrate milestones such as completing the acute phase of care, transitioning to wellness care or achieving a specific goal. Compliments at these times solidify the patient’s trust in your recommendations and their commitment to long-term health.

Team effort: Compliments across the practice

Compliments shouldn’t be limited to the doctor. Your entire team plays a role in creating a positive patient experience. From the front desk staff to the clinical team, everyone should be trained to look for opportunities to compliment patients. A warm “You’re doing so great with your appointments!” or “Your dedication to your exercises is paying off!” can go a long way in reinforcing positive behavior.

The ripple effect of compliments

Happy patients are more likely to stay, pay and refer others to your practice. A well-timed compliment can transform a routine visit into a memorable experience. Patients who feel valued and recognized are not only more likely to comply with care plans but also to share their positive experiences with friends and family.

Take action today

Start making compliments a part of your practice culture. Encourage your team to find something positive to say to each patient during every interaction. Create a culture of celebration, encouragement and acknowledgment.

Remember, everyone loves a compliment—and in your practice, they can be the key to healthier, happier patients who stick with their care and spread the word about your exceptional care.
