The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 22.7 percent of the population currently suffers from arthritis or a similar chronic pain disease,
This makes it one of the top causes of work-related disability.
Sadly, that number is expected to increase to 26 percent by the year 2040, ultimately afflicting approximately 78 million Americans daily.
While there is no known cure for arthritis, researchers are continuously working to improve the treatment remedies available. When it comes to natural options, turmeric is often at the top of the list.
Turmeric for arthritic conditions
Turmeric has long been touted for its powerful medicinal properties and has been credited with the prevention, treatment or relief of multiple chronic health issues. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health shares that these conditions range from fatigue and breathing issues to liver problems and even cancer. But one other condition that this ingredient has also been found to benefit is arthritis.
Many studies have focused solely on one of turmeric’s top curcuminoids, curcumin, crediting it for such a positive arthritic result. For instance, one study published in Phytotherapy Research involved 45 patients who had been previously diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, or RA.
Each participant was placed in one of three groups. One group took 500 mg of curcumin, one took 50 mg diclofenac sodium, and the remaining group took both. Measurements were taken at various points to discover whether there were any changes in the subjects’ Disease Activity Score (DAS), an index used to measure the number of tender and swollen joints, among other factors.
Researchers also evaluated the individuals’ American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria in regard to these same symptoms.
Upon conclusion of the study, it was determined that all three groups sustained “significant changes” in their DAS. However, the group taking curcumin had the highest improvement in regard to both the DAS and the ACR, with the researchers citing that they were “significantly better than the patients in the diclofenac sodium group.”
Additionally, no adverse events were reported in this study, helping reinforce curcumin’s safety.
Arthritis and Boswellia serrata
Another supplement that science has linked to improvements in arthritic conditions is Boswellia serrata. Sometimes referred to as ‘the Indian Frankincense herb,’ Healthline explains that Boswellia serrata is an herbal extract that is taken from a tree by the same name and has been used for centuries to treat a variety of chronic inflammatory conditions.
But is it safe and effective? Science says yes.
For example, several studies have been conducted on Boswellia serrata extract and its impact on knee-related osteoarthritis. One involved 75 patients and another included 60, and both found “statistically significant improvements” in regard to knee-related pain and function, sometimes as early as five days into the treatments. Safety of this extract was confirmed by both studies as well.
Not all supplements offer relief
While this is great news for arthritis sufferers around the world, the reality is that not all turmeric or Boswellia serrata supplements offer the relief the consumer is looking to achieve.
One issue that could prevent them from obtaining stellar results is when supplemental manufacturers use subpar ingredients, lessening their effect. In some cases, known toxic chemicals may even be added, an issue that can’t always be addressed if the products are made outside of the U.S. and beyond proper controls.
Another concern for supplemental users is bioavailability of the ingredients. In other words, just because you may consume turmeric and Boswellia serrata, this doesn’t mean that your body will be able to use the ingredient effectively.
For instance, research has found that our bodies do a better job of absorbing iron if it is taken with vitamin C.
Therefore, a supplement that has both will likely be more effective than one that has only the iron and no additional ingredients that can help enhance its absorption.
Turmeripure, focused on creating solutions
Turmeripure is a company devoted to resolving both of these issues, providing consumers with safe and effective curcumin and boswellia serrata.
One way Turmeripure does this is by using only lab grade ingredients. For the curcumin extract, this involves using 95 percent curcuminoids. For the Boswellia serrata, it means utilizing 65 percent boswellic acid. Additionally, all of their products made in U.S. are third party tested under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversight, so consumers can be sure that what they’re getting is a safe and natural remedy.
Turmeripure provides maxiumum bioavailability and absorption with the inclusion of BioPerine black pepper extract (piperine) in their supplements. In a post on NutritionFacts.org, Michael Greger, MD, FACLM, explains that adding this one ingredient alone can boost bioavailability by as much as 2,000 percent. This ultimately increases effectiveness of the star ingredients, potentially translating into higher levels of relief.
As science continues to progress, so too will the natural remedies for arthritic conditions. Additionally, if the solution lies within supplemental options, the key is to ensure that they are lab grade and can be readily absorbed by the body as that’s when they can provide the most relief.
