Supplements you can recommend to improve back health

Hanna Marcus November 25, 2024

back pain supplements

Back pain is prolific in the U.S., with nearly 40% of adults reporting that they experience it. As a DC, a majority of your practice undoubtedly involves treating the symptoms and underlying causes of back pain, enabling your patients to live healthier, happier lives.

Of the potential causes of back pain, injuries to discs, connective tissue or ligaments are common culprits. Understanding how to treat these structures through chiropractic care and supplementation is essential to helping patients suffering from back pain.

Dee Cee Labs’ DISC GARD+ supplement features a formula designed to deliver the ideal amount of ingredients that are critical for bone tissues, ligaments and cartilage. The vitamin and mineral formula works alongside other nutrients to support chiropractic care as well as connective tissues and intravertable discs.

The top supplements for supporting back health

Manganese. On its own, manganese is known for its role in helping connective tissue regenerate. When it comes to back injuries and back pain, this improved ability to repair soft tissue can work wonders for people struggling with pain–both in short-term relief and long-term outcomes.

The true power of manganese is only realized when it is paired with complementary compounds that work synergistically to increase the healing of back injuries. These other compounds include calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, glucosamine HCL, MSM and vitamins D, C and B6.

Opting for a supplement that includes these additional beneficial ingredients is ideal for recovering from back injuries and maintaining functional back health.

Calcium. Bone health is directly related to calcium, as it is a key nutrient in building bone. In addition, calcium helps with disc and ligament repair, making it a superstar supplement for those struggling with back problems.

For connective tissue to properly regenerate, calcium must be present. In fact, studies have shown that serum calcium concentration is directly correlated with disk degeneration–calcium must be present in order for connective tissue to grow, re-grow and remain healthy.

Magnesium. Most diets are lacking magnesium, making it an essential nutrient to obtain via supplementation. Magnesium is important in its own right, and its synergistic relationship with calcium only enhances the benefits it can bring to the body.

This supplement is vital for normal bodily functions–including more than 300 enzymatic reactions–including the repair of damaged or injured tissue. If a patient reports muscular weakness or consistent fatigue, it is fair to assume that magnesium deficiency may be an underlying factor.

Zinc. Studies have implied that zinc deficiency is linked to lower levels of collagen, which is essential for tissue repair, including healing wounds and fixing connective tissue damage. Supplementing with zinc, especially in combination with complementary nutrients such as manganese, can help individuals overcome back pain and the underlying issues that cause it.

Together, zinc and manganese help synthesize collagen, making these two supplements highly effective when combined.

Potassium. Positive correlations have been found between appropriate levels of potassium and the presence of healthy discs and lower rates of back pain. In other words, those with adequate levels of potassium are less likely to report that they experience back pain, and their discs are more likely to be healthy.

Including potassium in a supplementation regimen aimed at improved back health and reduced back pain is a must.

Glucosamine, MSM and vitamins. Other ingredients to look for in supplements intended to improve back health are glucosamine, MSM and vitamins D, C and B6. These supplements offer the following benefits.

  • Glucosamine aids in building and supporting healthy cartilage.
  • MSM works with glucosamine to enhance said benefits and helps to reduce pain, stiffness and swelling in joints.
  • Vitamin D plays a significant role in creating healthy connective tissue.
  • Vitamin C helps promote collagen production.
  • B6 reduces inflammation.
