Managing glucose and cholesterol levels with berberine 500

Hanna Marcus October 25, 2024

Prediabetes runs rampant in American adults, with nearly 98 million (almost 40% of the population) meeting the qualifying criteria. What does this mean? Simply put, a huge proportion of the adults in the U.S. have elevated blood glucose levels that don’t quite reach Type 2 diabetes levels.

These numbers are alarming, and DCs who want the best outcomes for their patients should be aware of the prevalence of prediabetes. Encouraging lifestyle changes in your prediabetic patients–including the use of supplements like berberine–is part of a comprehensive approach to healing.

Supplements like Berberine 500 can benefit prediabetic patients by supporting healthy cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

Berberine supplementation and glucose and cholesterol levels

The basics and history of berberine

Berberine is naturally occurring in the berberis shrub, which grows in Asia. It is also found in other plants in North America, such as goldenseal, California poppy, coptis, Oregon grape and tree turmeric.

People have used berberine, once extracted from the plant, in traditional medicine for a long time. Chinese medicine is a great example of this rich history of berberine in folk medicine, where it is referred to as “golden thread.” In this context, berberine was typically mixed with bitter melon or ginseng.

Native Americans used berberine to help improve eyesight and calm uneasy stomachs. They would even mix it with fat and use it as an insect repellent.

There are many other examples of berberine being a staple ingredient in folk medicine, pointing toward its historical significance and observational effectiveness. Many of these traditional uses have been validated by modern science now that the benefits of berberine have been researched.

The benefits of berberine

Many cultures throughout history have believed that berberine has a variety of benefits, including:

  • Settling upset stomachs
  • Improving eyesight
  • Reducing pain from burns
  • Supporting healthy digestion
  • Improving skin health

Now, several studies have been conducted, giving us scientific insights into the potential benefits of supplementing with berberine. These studies indicate that this naturally occurring supplement does, in fact, correlate to certain health benefits, including lowering glucose.

One recent study found a link between berberine and healthier gut microbiota. More specifically, it implied that berberine might contribute to the modulation of intestinal barrier function and p-glycoprotein.

Other studies have linked berberine to helping regulate metabolism, reducing recurring colorectal polyps and even treating ferroptosis-induced cardiomyopathy. Future research to determine whether berberine can be used to treat COVID-19 is also on the table, further indicating the perceived versatility of the supplement.

Using chromium and cinnamon with berberine

Improving the efficacy of a supplement relies on pairing it with ingredients that complement it. In supplements like Berberine 500, thoughtful formulation ensures you receive maximum benefits from the best ingredients.

When it comes to berberine, chromium and cinnamon are the perfect match. Together, these two complementary ingredients work with berberine to further support healthy levels of cholesterol and blood glucose.

Chromium can be found in a variety of foods, such as liver, egg yolks and broccoli. This mineral is most effective when 20 to 30 mcg are consumed per day (depending on a variety of personal factors like age, sex and pregnancy).

In addition to being delicious, the aromatic spice of cinnamon is incredibly healthy. While it may steal the show in holiday favorites like breads, pastries, pies and seasonal drinks, the health benefits of cinnamon are where it really shines.

Studies have shown that cinnamon paired with chromium and berberine helps modulate the expression and secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1. It has also been shown to have hepatoprotective benefits.

High-quality supplements mean high-quality results

Because high cholesterol and blood glucose can contribute to a variety of health issues, such as prediabetes, supplementing with Berberine 500 and adopting lifestyle changes can help your patients achieve better outcomes and live healthier. Opting for natural therapies you can trust is essential, and Berberine 500 is an excellent example of premium supplements making a difference for your patients.
