Metagenics to host webinar on role of medical foods in managing chronic diseases

Chiropractic Economics Staff October 22, 2012

October 22, 2012 — Metagenics Inc., a nutrigenomics and lifestyle medicine company focused on improving health and reversing chronic illness, announced it will host a free webinar Oct. 24, 2012 at 4 p.m. PST focused on the applications of medical foods for nutritionally supporting the dietary management of chronic illnesses.

The Metagenics University webinar, “Medical Foods: Nutritional Solutions to Chronic Disease” will be presented by Jacob Kornberg MD, FACS, director of medical education at the Metagenics Functional Medicine Research Center (FMRC).

“Dietary management is a critical element in patient care that is often overlooked during the early stages of disease onset and in ongoing clinical management of chronic illness as well,” said Kornberg. “Medical foods, a special category of food with unique requirements outlined by the FDA, can be an important part of the nutritional management of for medical conditions with distinctive nutritional requirements. Medical foods are an especially important option to incorporate into clinical care as patients look to their physicians for a more comprehensive approach to disease management that avoids the side effects and safety concerns of many existing pharmaceutical drugs.”

The webinar will focus on findings from Metagenics’ research team of physicians and scientists, such as:

The potential role of Metagenics’ selective kinase response modulator (SKRM) technology in positively influencing cellular function and helping to manage inflammation that is linked to many diseases. These proprietary, naturally derived SKRM ingredients were found in laboratory testing at the MetaProteomics Research Center (the laboratory research arm of Metagenics, Inc.) to target and positively influence cellular signaling that has been disrupted by kinase activity associated with compromised functioning and disease.

Published research showing the effectiveness of medical foods, such as an article published last year in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology on the results of a clinical trial at three universities. This 12-week study demonstrated that Metagenics’ UltraMeal Plus 360?medical food in combination with a low-glycemic-load, Mediterranean-style diet was 40 percent more effective than the diet alone in resolving metabolic syndrome, a condition that increases the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes and affects one-third of all American adults.

Clinical applications for other medical foods, including the dietary management of CVD conditions, type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders and illnesses characterized by fatigue and pain.
