In December, 53 CUKC students were honored with scholarship awards during the 2023 Cleveland University-Kansas City and Cleveland Foundation Fund Scholarship Awards Banquet. Nearly 200 students, family members, donors, faculty and staff attended the Dec. 1 event.
According to a CUKC press release, Jessica Ramirez, vice president of advancement, announced that a total of $70,000 was distributed, representing 37 scholarships administrated by the Cleveland Foundation Fund.
In addition, other scholarships were donated by organizations such as the Spencer C. Duncan Make it Count Foundation, which supports our student veterans, and the Heart of America Patriot Foundation, which provides scholarships to students with the Chapter 35 designation. Chapter 35 eligibility includes students who are dependents of a U.S. Armed Forces veteran or a service member who has died, was captured, injured in the line of duty, or is missing.
Dr. Timothy Meng ’66, chairman of the Cleveland College Foundation and member of the Board of Trustees, provided the welcome for the evening event. Meng is a second-generation chiropractor and father of a third-generation chiropractor.
“The Cleveland College Foundation exists to financially support the University’s mission of education, scholarship, and service and sustain the rich history of Cleveland University-Kansas City, which is starting its second century this year,” Meng said. “The University and the Foundation are sincerely grateful for the generosity and investment in CUKC students.”
To become eligible for an award, students must apply for any scholarships for which they were eligible, which includes submitting an essay. A faculty and staff scholarship committee reviews each year’s applications and essays. The recipients are announced at the annual Scholarship Banquet, and the scholarship amounts apply to the student’s upcoming academic year.
“It was a wonderful event, and I know all the donors, employees, and guests were excited to celebrate these students,” Jalonna Bowie, CUKC director of campus and alumni relations, said. “It’s our goal to have as many students apply as possible. We hope to continue, if not increase, the amount of scholarships awarded next year.

CUKC President Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III presented the awards, followed by commemorative photos of students with their donor or CUKC representative.
