On Oct. 11, Northeast College of Health Sciences celebrated the official ribbon-cutting of its new Long Island branch campus.
During the event, local and state leaders welcomed Northeast and recognized the college for bringing chiropractic healthcare education back to the Greater New York City area, noted a college press release.
“Today is not just a celebration of progress, but also true homecoming,” said President Michael Mestan, DC, EdD, during the event.
In addition to its main Finger Lakes-region campus in Seneca Falls, New York, the college has owned the facility on Long Island since 1972, providing community health services at its Levittown Health Center. The school’s ties to New York began even earlier, with the college’s 1919 founding in a Manhattan brownstone, then known as the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic.
The new Long Island branch campus, which welcomed its first cohort of its doctor of chiropractic program this September, provides advanced learning spaces for students, including high-tech, hands-on learning tools such as Force Sensing Table Technology™ and interactive 3D digital Anatomage tables. Combined with the best of traditional techniques, the new learning spaces and campus provide students with even better access to comprehensive, evidence-informed chiropractic education.
New opportunities at Long Island branch campus
“This new campus represents a significant step forward for our college, a milestone made possible only through the unwavering commitment and effort of our entire community,” said Mestan. “Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students by expanding our reach, enhancing accessibility and strengthening partnerships with regional alumni, educational institutions and healthcare providers.”
For new chiropractic student and Long Island resident Victoria Valdes (’27), the establishment of the branch campus means she can stay close to her family while fulfilling her dream of opening a chiropractic office on Long Island.
“Being born and raised on Long Island means so much more than knowing where the best pizza spots and Italian bakeries are,” Valdes said while speaking at the ribbon-cutting event. “Being a part of something bigger than myself goes hand in hand with my student experience at Northeast and it ties into what it means to be a chiropractor. A chiropractic career is so powerful, and our story of success begins here at Northeast,” Valdes said.
Also in attendance at the event were Hempstead Councilman Dennis Dunne; Town of Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray; Nassau County legislators Thomas McKevitt and John Ferretti; and many chamber members, business owners, and friends and members of the college community, including numerous alumni and Northeast Board of Trustees Chairman Rick Rosa, DC (’96).
Christine Sweeney, President of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce, spoke at the event.
“We are thrilled to have Northeast College here in Levittown as not only an academic institution but also an outpatient (center),” Sweeney said, referring to the Levittown Health Center, which provides integrative healthcare, including acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition counseling and chiropractic care. “Institutions such as Northeast College of Health Sciences are the backbone of our community and our economy as well as our neighborhood.”
