Use orthotics for foot pain

Chiropractic Economics October 22, 2013

Metatarsalgia is a condition affecting the ball of the foot. It is a common ailment felt by a wide array of age groups. Foot orthotics may be one viable option to alleviate peripheral conditions associated with ball of foot disorder. Contact orthotics, in particular, may provide support to reduce symptoms of pain, as well.

It’s in the arches

If you are dealing with ball of foot pain, you need to make sure your orthotics are tailored made for you specifically. Many types of support do not have high enough arches, so they just don’t work. The idea in this is to redistribute force to relieve undue pressure. Your orthotic cushion should be specialized, too.

Don’t forget the cushion

Pressure is a particular problem for people afflicted with foot pain. Disease, dysfunction resulting from that may even cause added injury, as well. Orthotics redistributes force that causes burning or sharp pain with specially manufactured cushions. For orthotics to effectively work, however, make sure to speak with your practitioner about where your cushions should go. Some patients experience relief when orthotics use cushions both above and below a person’s foot, for example.

Make ‘em

You need a cast of your foot to get the greats orthotics you want. Specialists often use non-weight bearing casts, but if you really want to get fancy, have laser scan generated casts. There is debate among specialists about which particular avenue if most effective or cost efficient. If you digitally construct your cast, be sure your practitioner is qualified and has a sufficient lab and adjoining equipment.

Not all orthotics work to remedy every condition in every circumstance. Your practitioner will probably determine what is best using a step-by-step process to deal with any pain you experience; there may, in fact, be other kinds of orthotics that can help at first. Evidence indicates, however, orthotics with especially high arches and dual sets of cushions work best. •Remember, if you see a practitioner ask questions about their knowledge with regard to foot orthotics, in particular. Ensure a specialist is trained well enough to provide the help you need.
