The state of integrated medicine and chiropractic

Mark Sanna, DC February 28, 2025

The state of integrative medicine and integrated medicine and chiropractic

Let’s face it: Healthcare isn’t what it used to be.

Gone are the days of isolated practices operating in their own silos. Today, patients expect (and deserve) something better. They want healthcare that’s coordinated, comprehensive and focused on their unique needs. That’s where integrated medicine and chiropractic come in, offering a modern approach to care that combines the best of all worlds: natural healing, evidence-based treatments and a collaborative team of experts.

So, what does this look like in action? It’s called a multidisciplinary practice (MDP), where DCs, medical providers (MDs, PAs, NPRs), physical therapists (PTs, PTAs) and other specialists work together to deliver seamless care.

Why integration matters

Think about the complex conditions patients face today—chronic pain, injuries, degenerative disorders and the list goes on. No single healthcare provider has all the answers, but together, we can offer solutions. By bringing together DCs and other professionals, integrated medicine creates a well-rounded approach that meets patients where they are.

Research shows that this kind of collaboration can improve outcomes. For example, chiropractic adjustments combined with physical therapy or regenerative medicine can deliver relief more quickly and effectively than either approach alone. Patients benefit from having a team who’s all on the same page, and providers enjoy the satisfaction of making a real difference.

Set the foundation for your multidisciplinary practice

Building a successful multidisciplinary practice starts with two essential pillars: compliance and teamwork.

Navigate the legal side

Every state has its own rules about how you can structure practices, who can own what and what services you can offer. This might sound complicated, but don’t let it scare you off. Partner with a healthcare-savvy attorney who understands your state’s regulations.

Avoid shortcuts like “on-paper-only” physician ownership or questionable billing practices—they’ll land you in hot water. Instead, focus on creating a legitimate, patient-centered practice that follows all the rules. It’s worth it in the long run.

Get billing right

Let’s talk billing—no one’s favorite topic, but it’s critical. In an MDP, each provider bills for their own services using their unique provider number. For example, always bill chiropractic services under the DC’s number, never a medical doctor’s.

You must have compliance programs. Regular audits and staff training will keep your practice on track and out of trouble. Trust me: A little diligence here goes a long way.

Expand your service offerings

One of the best things about an integrated medicine is the chance to offer patients more options. By adding advanced therapies, you can meet a broader range of needs while growing your revenue.

Here are a few popular options to consider:

Physical therapy. Medicare reimburses for balance training, manual therapy, rehabilitative exercises and other therapeutic modalities when a licensed PT provides them.

Regenerative medicine. Think platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, Alpha-2 macroglobulin (A2M) or human cellular tissue products (HCTP) treatments. These therapies tap into the body’s natural healing power and work beautifully alongside chiropractic care.

Trigger-point injections. For patients dealing with stubborn pain, these injections can provide the relief they’ve been searching for.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Help patients feel their best by addressing hormone imbalances with customized treatments.

Intravenous nutrition therapy (IVNT). Boost energy and support recovery with IV vitamins, minerals and peptides delivered straight to the bloodstream.

These services aren’t just about treating symptoms—they’re about enhancing patients’ quality of life. That’s something to be proud of.

Build your dream team

Running a successful multidisciplinary practice takes a team effort—both clinical and non-clinical.

Of course, you need great DCs, medical providers and PTs, but don’t forget about the behind-the-scenes pros who keep things running smoothly. Accountants, marketing specialists and compliance consultants are just as important as the folks delivering care.

Foster collaboration across your entire team to create a practice that’s efficient, ethical and built to last.

Market your integrated practice

Let’s talk marketing. How do you spread the word about your amazing new integrated practice?

First, focus on what makes you unique. Highlight the fact that you offer coordinated, patient-centered care under one roof. Share patient success stories, create educational content and let people know how your services can help them.

Don’t underestimate the power of digital marketing. Your website and social media platforms are great tools for connecting with your community. Showcase your team’s expertise, post updates about new services and engage with followers in a friendly, approachable way.

And remember, marketing isn’t just about attracting patients—it’s about building trust. When people see your practice as a leader in integrated care, they’ll be excited to choose you.

Overcome challenges

No transition comes without its challenges, and integrated practices are no exception. From legal hurdles to interprofessional dynamics, you have a lot to consider.

Here are a few tips to make the process smoother:

Communicate clearly. Regular team meetings and protocols for collaboration will keep everyone on the same page.

Stay compliant. Update your staff regularly on the latest regulations and best practices.

Remain patient-centered. Always keep the focus on what’s best for your patients and you won’t go wrong.

The future of integrated medicine and chiropractic

Integrated care is here to stay, and that’s great news for DCs. By embracing this model, you’re not just keeping up with trends—you’re leading the charge.

Multidisciplinary practices align perfectly with the industry’s move toward value-based care, where the focus is on quality outcomes and patient satisfaction. When you integrate, you’re setting your practice up for long-term success while delivering the kind of care patients truly deserve.

Final thoughts

Integrated medicine and chiropractic represent the future of healthcare, and you have the chance to be part of it. Combine your expertise with that of other professionals to create an innovative, patient-centered and impactful practice.

Whether you’re just starting to explore the idea or are ready to take the leap, know that you’re not alone. Ready to make a difference in your patients’ lives? The future of integrated care is bright—and it’s waiting for you to step into it. Let’s do this!
