Sherman College joins Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Matching Program

Chiropractic Economics Staff December 6, 2017

December 4, 2017—In recognition of the dedication and commitment to community service of AmeriCorps alumni, Sherman College of Chiropractic now offers a one-time matching scholarship of up to $4,000 for AmeriCorps Education Award recipients who are admitted to the Doctor of Chiropractic program. In addition, Sherman College will waive the application fee for any AmeriCorps Education Award recipient.
AmeriCorps engages more than 80,000 young adults in service each year. AmeriCorps members meet pressing community needs and mobilize millions of volunteers while gaining valuable professional, educational and life skills. These individuals are leaders with the determination and skills to succeed.
The first recipient of a Segal AmeriCorps Education Matching Award at Sherman College, James Hopkins, is set to enroll in January 2018. Hopkins served as a health educator at the Florida Department of Health-Duval with the National Health Corps in Florida.
Sherman College Director of Financial Aid Kendra Strange said when she saw Hopkins’ request for a matching award and read his biography, she knew he would be an ideal fit for the Doctor of Chiropractic program at the college.
“After reading a little about his service with AmeriCorps, I knew that James would be exactly the type of student that Sherman College wants: enthusiastic, compassionate, committed and driven,” she said. “With Sherman’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center and our dedication to providing chiropractic care to our community, I could think of no better place for AmeriCorps alumni, with hearts for community service, than Sherman College.”
Noticing that only one other South Carolina institution and no other chiropractic colleges participated in the matching program, Strange began the process of getting Sherman College registered. Meanwhile, Hopkins attended the college’s October Showcase Sherman Weekend, the college’s VIP event for prospective students, and Strange had an opportunity to meet the aspiring chiropractor in person.
“My thoughts were confirmed that James made the right choice in enrolling at Sherman College,” she said of their first meeting. “Sherman College also made the right choice in investing in James and his fellow AmeriCorps alumni who may attend our institution in the years to come.”
Hopkins says he looks forward to enrolling in January. “It’s an honor to become a part of the Sherman family,” he shared. “I don’t believe the love at Sherman can be duplicated at any other school of chiropractic. All of the experience I have received while serving in the NHC AmeriCorps program this past year has more than supplemented what I’ll get in return from chiropractic!”
AmeriCorps alumni and other prospective students seeking information about Sherman College’s Segal AmeriCorps Education Matching Award should contact Strange at 800-849-8771, ext. 245, or email kstrange@sherman.edu.
