Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) faculty member Michael Ramcharan, MD, DC, EdD, vice-provost and assistant vice president of academic affairs, received the American Public Health Association Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization’s conference in October.
The accolade, noted an SCU press release, recognizes Ramcharan’s outstanding contributions to public health and integrative healthcare education as well as SCU’s mission to lead in whole health education.
A leader in health and education
Ramcharan, an established leader in higher education, brings over 25 years of experience to SCU, significantly impacting healthcare education and clinical practice. As a specialist in curricular design and inter-professional education, he leads SCU’s healthcare education efforts, ensuring students receive a holistic, innovative and integrative education.
Since 2007, Ramcharan has contributed extensively to APHA’s Chiropractic Health Care and Medical Care sections. His ground-breaking research and advocacy work cover essential healthcare topics, including infection control, hand hygiene and spinal rehabilitation. His recent APHA platform presentation, co-authored with Raheleh Khorsan, PhD, focuses on complementary and integrative healthcare for Black women with breast cancer, reflecting SCU’s commitment to diversity, health equity and integrative, whole health practices.
Ramcharan’s American Public Health Association lifetime achievement Award is not his only accolade. He has also received the W.D. Harper Science of Excellence Achievement Award and achieved a full professorship in physical medicine and rehabilitation. His broad expertise as a medical doctor, doctor of chiropractic, doctor of education and master of public health is a testament to SCU’s commitment to truly integrative and holistic care that blends the best of conventional and complementary medicine.
Ramcharan has held key leadership roles within APHA during his tenure there, including three terms as section counselor and two terms as governing counselor. His professional journey and relentless advocacy for public health inspire students and colleagues alike.
