Northeast College of Health Sciences contributed $44.4 million to the local and state economy in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, according to the biennial economic impact study by The Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York (CICU).
This impact, noted a Northeast College press release, is the sum of several factors. The institutional impact of the college accounts for $38.7 million, including spending on research, construction, instruction, technology, salaries and other operating expenses. Student and visitor impact, or money spent by students and campus visitors, accounts for $5.3 million of the college’s economic impact on the Finger Lakes and New York state regions.
With the Fall 2024 opening of Northeast College’s new Long Island branch campus, as well as the kickoff of new undergraduate and certificate degree programs, the already-substantial economic impact of this institution will continue to grow.
Northeast supports hundreds of jobs, too
The Finger Lakes region contains 15 independent colleges and universities that collectively enroll 41,000 students and award more than 11,000 degrees each year. Combined, these institutions have a total economic impact of $6.3 billion on the region.
From 2022-2023, Northeast College supported 400 jobs, including 200 on campus, with a combined payroll of $16.6 million.
As a whole, the independent sector of higher education supported 18,000 direct campus jobs throughout the Finger Lakes region in fiscal year 2022-23, including faculty, staff and graduate assistant positions.
New York State’s independent sector is the largest in the U.S. Private nonprofit colleges and universities in New York enroll 44% of the 1.1 million students in postsecondary education in the state and award 60% of the bachelor’s and graduate degrees these students earn.
