August 2, 2012 — In a letter dated July 26, Brenda Eshee wrote to Stephen Press, DC, expressing the thanks of United Airlines for his interceding in an onboard medical emergency en route from Newark Liberty International Airport to Phoenix.
A passenger travelling in first class was having difficulty breathing and the flight crew put out a call for a “doctor on board.” Stephen Press, DC, PhD, of Englewood was on his way to the national conference for sports physicians practicing chiropractic to promote his new book, The History of Sports Chiropractic when he heard the call. He evaluated the patient’s vital signs, and ordered oxygen.
Remaining with the patient until it was time to land, along with another physician who responded a bit later, he met with the crew of first responders who came to remove the passenger from the aircraft, which had been diverted to a different gate for the purpose.
Press is no stranger to this kind of emergency, having answered such calls some three or four times. Press is the founder of the world agency that governs the professional specialty of sports chiropractic, and was chief physician of the Winter Olympic team of the USSR.
