Chiropractic Wellness: April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness Month

“There are a number of studies that prove the direct correlation between irritable bowel syndrome relief and chiropractic care…”

Your patients that suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are not alone — IBS is common, with prevalence estimated at 10-15%. Yet many people remain undiagnosed and unaware that their symptoms indicate a medically-recognized disorder.

IBS is a chronic, often debilitating, functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder with symptoms that include abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel behaviors, such as constipation and/or diarrhea.

Studies show that miscommunications in the nervous system are the main reason for IBS, and chiropractors have noted that nearly all people they see with IBS have spinal misalignments. Because the root cause of IBS has been identified as “a disruption in the communication between the brain and the GI tract,” it is easy to connect chiropractic care to IBS.

“There are a number of studies that prove the direct correlation between irritable bowel syndrome relief and chiropractic care,” write Paige Roth, DC, of True Roots Chiropractic. “One study followed a woman with IBS symptoms who underwent a series of cervical adjustments by her chiropractor. After just one adjustment, she experienced a regular bowel movement and a decrease in associated symptoms. Her healing and relief continued with more adjustments. Other studies show that those with Crohn’s disease, which is similar to IBS but often more severe, can be significantly affected by nerve compression and adjustments.
