Horizon BCBS to pay $8 million for putting claims on hold

April 13, 2011 — The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance has ordered Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield to reprocess claims it placed on hold as a secondary insurer along with Medicare.

Horizon is required to pay any money owed to members and medical providers plus 12 percent interest. Horizon was also fined $500,000 and is required to pay the state of New Jersey an estimated $1.3 million it made in interest while these claims were on hold. In total, Horizon will have to pay $8 million.
