Cleveland University-Kansas City (CUKC) will host science-minded high school students from Missouri’s Blue Springs School District for an experience-heavy skills and knowledge summer camp June 2-6.
The cooperative experience between the district and CUKC, developed as an immersive, problem-based learning project, was first held in 2018. The camp is geared toward students considering a career in life/health sciences or healthcare.
The event focuses on a single project requiring attendees to explore and expand their knowledge of human biology principles from anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to determine how they apply to the care of a mock patient.
Multidisciplinary experience
“This weeklong partnership with the Blue Springs School District is consistently well attended,” said Diane Bartholomew, DHSc, CUKC’s vice president of academic affairs. ”The 25 hours of experience expose high school students to elements of microbiology, human biology, physics, radiology, anatomy, exercise science, physiology and chiropractic applications.”
CUKC Human Biology instructor Brian Peterson and other CUKC faculty members lead students through the project’s stages, allowing them to explore healthcare in a more clinical setting rather than the typical classroom and lab facilities available in the Blue Springs district.
Over the week, CUKC faculty members help the students see how the various programs offered at CUKC could contribute to patient care and what role each plays in the overall healthcare landscape. These programs include human biology, radiologic technology, exercise science, exercise physiology and sports performance. Students will also see the chiropractic technique simulation lab used by CUKC’s doctor of chiropractic degree students.
The camp will also include material on microbiology, the Hippocratic tradition in medicine, the anatomy lab, and physics and functional electrical stimulation in the context of treating those with spinal cord injuries.
