American College of Physicians issues guidelines for low-back pain: ‘Avoid drugs.’

In an update to a report issued 10 years ago, the American College of Physicians (ACP) published a meta-analysis on the treatment of low-back pain. The study, released on February 14, 2017, is in the form of guidelines directed toward “all clinicians” and the patient population suffering from acute, subacute, and chronic low-back pain.In this terminology, “acute” stands for pain lasting fewer than four weeks, “subacute” for pain lasting from four to 12 weeks, and “chronic” meaning pain lasting more than 12 weeks.

During last week’s Super Bowl festivities, one Texas Chiropractic College faculty member was given the opportunity of a lifetime. 2015 graduate of Texas Chiropractic College and current associate professor and attending clinician, Cory Mayon, DC, was selected to serve as the team chiropractor for the Atlanta Falcons in the days leading up to Super Bowl LI in Houston. Mayon was contacted by the Falcons after recommendations from RICE University Sports Medicine Team.

Chiropractic has never faced a threat as serious as the one facing DCs in the state of Texas. In August 2016, a judge in Texas backed a lawsuit filed by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) against the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners (TCBE) that removed diagnosis from the chiropractic scope of practice. If they see the TMA prevail in this ruling and if the appeal on behalf of the TCA and TCBE fails, you could very well be looking at diagnosis and subluxation being removed from your scope of practice.

Just a little physical activity seems to go a long way toward helping older adults with arthritis remain able to do daily tasks, a new study finds. Older adults with arthritis-related joint pain and stiffness need to keep moving to remain functionally independent. But only 10 percent of older Americans with arthritis in their knees meet federal guidelines. However, this Northwestern University study found that doing even about one-third of that amount is still beneficial.
