Advanced Berberine 500: A key player in managing glucose and cholesterol levels

Dagmar November 9, 2023

Berberine has been around for centuries as part of the folk medicine tool kit, but has become more mainstream as researchers discover its various health benefits. Advanced Berberine 500 delivers a healthy triple punch, with berberine teaming up with cinnamon and chromium for extra benefits, including the support of healthy blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

The CDC reports 96 million adults in the U.S. have prediabetes, when blood glucose levels are high but not at Type 2 diabetes ranges. Of that number, more than 26 million are aged 65 years or older. Lifestyle changes could help manage or even reverse prediabetes; however, by adding supplements, such as Advanced Berberine 500, patients can see improved glucose and cholesterol levels, which in turn can help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

What is berberine?

Berberine is found naturally in the berberis shrub, also known as the barberry shrub. These shrubs are found in certain areas of Asia. The compound is also found in several other plants, including the North American native goldenseal, Oregon grape, California poppy, tree turmeric, coptis and other plants found around the world. Berberine is a colorless and slightly bitter, and it is an alkaloid that reacts with acids to form salts. It is extracted from the rhizomes of the barberry plant, using one aqueous extraction or acid dye method.

What are the benefits of berberine?

Berberine has been used in traditional folk medicines for years. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine often refer to berberine as “golden thread,’ especially if the compound has been extracted from coptis. Berberine was sometimes combined with ginseng or bitter melon, and practitioners believed the compound helped balance fire and water elements.

Native Americans used berberine from the goldenseal plant to settle upset stomachs, and it was believed to promote good eyesight. The roots of goldenseal were also ground and mixed with fat to create an insect repellent. In eastern countries, berberine found in tree turmeric helped to reduce the pain of burns, supported healthy digestive systems as well as skin health. Berberine also has been found to have a glucose-lowering effect.

A study published in the August 2022 Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis suggested a link between gut microbiota and berberine. Results pointed to the possibility berberine may modulate intestinal barrier function and P-glycoprotein.

Results from an earlier study suggested berberine inhibited mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, leading to the suppression of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, and the enhancement of glycolysis. Berberine jump-starts AMP-activated protein kinase, which plays a role in regulating metabolism.

A 2020 clinical trial published in the Lancet journal reported berberine had a positive effect when given to participants who were undergoing repeat colonoscopies. When given supplemental berberine, patients experienced a reduction in the number of recurring colorectal polyps.

Berberine may have the potential to treat ferroptosis-induced cardiomyopathy, and separate clinical trials and prospective studies are being considered to determine the role berberine can play in the treatment of COVID-19.

Chromium and cinnamon are team players

Advanced Berberine 500 includes two additional ingredients that work hand-in-hand with berberine to support healthy blood glucose levels and maintain cholesterol levels in normal ranges:

  • Chromium is a mineral found in foods such as broccoli, liver, bran cereal, egg yolks and some fruits. The amounts of chromium are small and can vary even in the same types of food sources, as chromium may depend on the amounts of mineral in the growing medium. Dietary intakes of chromium range from 20 and 35 mcg per day depending on factors such as age, sex, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Cinnamon is found in the bark of the Cinnamomum family of trees. The aromatic spice is a familiar part of many holiday celebrations, flavoring breads, pastries and other foods. But when partnered with berberine and chromium, cinnamon can offer health benefits. The study reported in Natural Products and Human Diseases; Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology (January 2022), reported that cinnamon helps modulate glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) expression and secretion. And a 2022 article pointed to a theory that a cinnamon-berberine combination has hepatoprotective benefits.

High blood glucose can contribute to many health issues, even if it is still falls within prediabetic ranges. Healthy lifestyle changes along with supplements, such as Advanced Berberine 500, help support ideal glucose and cholesterol ranges and are key ingredients in your patient’s success plan.
