Logan University research study looks at effects of nutritional supplements on ankle sprains

Chiropractic Economics Staff March 7, 2014

LoganUniversityMarch 7, 2014 — Logan University is looking for participants for a clinical research study examining how effective a specific nutritional supplement in conjunction with chiropractic care is for patients with acute ankle sprains.

The multisite randomized controlled trial is funded by Standard Process Inc. and studies the effects of chiropractic care used in combination with Ligaplex I and Glucosamine Synergy, two nutritional supplements used for acute ligament and muscle support and to maintain healthy joint function.

“Ankle sprains are the most common sports injury, yet we don’t have an effective treatment that speeds up the recovery time,” said Logan University’s Dean of Research Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, CHES, FICC. “That’s why we’re doing a rigorous scientific study. If chiropractic care and nutritional supplements are shown to be effective in ankle sprains, we can start studying the treatment for other ligament injuries.”

The study is being conducted at 18 sites, including all of Logan University’s teaching clinics as well as chiropractic clinics in Virginia, Tennessee, Maine, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Participants are randomly assigned to two groups, either receiving the supplements or a placebo with inactive ingredients.

To qualify for the study, participants must be between the ages of 18 to 50 and have suffered an acute ankle sprain within a week prior to receiving chiropractic care. Participants can earn up to $60, $10 for each of six follow-up assessments over a six-month period.

Those interested in joining the study can contact Michelle Anderson, the project coordinator, at 636-230-1946 or via email at michelle.anderson@logan.edu.
