Texas Chiropractic College faculty member’s work published in American Journal of Physiology

Chiropractic Economics Staff September 27, 2017

September 22, 2017– Shari Wynd, DC, associate professor and Department Chair of Foundational Sciences at Texas Chiropractic College, was recently recognized for her work on research that was published in the American Journal of Physiology. Wynd collaborated on this project with Aladin Boriek, PhD preeminent researcher in respiratory mechanics and professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

“Our recent paper titled, ‘Obesity modulates diaphragm curvature in subjects with and without COPD’ was published in the prestigious journal The American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, integrative and comparative physiology.  Our study found that diaphragm shape was not altered in obese and overweight subjects, regardless of their COPD severity; however, the diaphragm’s shape in normal weight COPD subjects was significantly altered.

Our finding demonstrates that obesity has a role in modulating lung function and further work is needed to understand this role.  This project was funded by the NIH (National Institute of Health) and the NSF (National Science Foundation),” Wynd Stated.

Wynd also added that she and Boriek are currently “preparing a grant application to investigate how respiratory mechanics can be altered with spinal manipulation.”

“[Dr. Boriek’s] knowledge on how COPD affects the shape of the lung during the disease process will be vital to examining how lung mechanics can be affected during chiropractic management of this chronic disease.  Dr. Boriek has been an extremely valuable member of TCC’s research team given his vast experience in writing and obtaining extramural funding,” she concluded.
