News roundup: Dry needling in Florida, Medicare modernization, the FTC nixes noncompetes and AI causes a stir
Dry needling legal for Florida DCs
Florida House Bill 1063, one of the Florida Chiropractic Association’s top initiatives of 2024, went to Gov. DeSantis’ desk for signature on June 17, along with 36 other pieces of legislation. He signed HB 1063: Practice of Chiropractic Medicine into law on June 26; this legislation corrects state licensing difficulties some DC students experienced because they earned their undergraduate degrees from non-U.S. colleges. It also provides statutory clarification that dry needling, performed after completing mandatory education, training and certification, is within the scope of chiropractic practice for Florida DCs.
Update: Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act moves (slowly) forward
According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate reintroduced legislation to increase access to Medicare-covered services provided by DCs. The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 1610/S. 799) would expand Medicare coverage to all chiropractic services within a DC’s state-licensed scope of practice. This act would give seniors access to a much higher number of non-drug treatment options to alleviate pain and improve function.
“Chiropractic care is a part of the solution for many patients who seek to avoid or reduce their reliance on prescription pain medications,” remarked ACA President Michael Martin, DC.
FTC bans noncompetes
The Federal Trade Commission issued a final rule to promote competition by banning noncompete agreements nationwide, a move that protects the fundamental freedom of workers to change jobs, thus increasing innovation and fostering the formation of new businesses. “The FTC’s final rule to ban noncompetes will ensure Americans have the freedom to pursue a new job, start a new business or bring a new idea to market,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan.
Experts expect the rule to generate more than 8,500 new businesses per year, add an estimated $524 per year to the average worker’s earnings, cut healthcare costs by up to $194 billion over the next decade and help drive innovation, leading to an estimated 17,000 to 29,000 more patents each year for the next 10 years.
D’Youville University features AI robot commencement speaker
D’Youville University’s spring 2024 commencement speaker was an artificial intelligence (AI) robot named Sophia, a development capping the school’s year-long campaign to generate awareness and education around AI. More than 2,000 students, faculty, staff, family and friends witnessed Sophia, designed and programmed by Hong Kong company Hanson Robotics, showcase the hard work and accomplishments of each student in the audience during an interview-style discussion with John Rizk, D’Youville University Student Government Association President.
Leading up to commencement, D’Youville University offered various educational opportunities to students, faculty and staff throughout the year to better understand and apply AI. In addition to online training modules, developmental lunch sessions and podcasts, the University hosted its annual “unpacking” event where 250 community members learned about the future of AI in healthcare.
“Our students will be the future of healthcare delivery. As we move to put our lives in their hands, D’Youville University hopes to ensure all students understand technology and can think critically about the future they build for us,” said D’Youville President Lorrie Clemo, PhD.
