September 16, 2011 — The University of Western States and Northwestern Health Sciences University recently received a $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine for a randomized trial to study on cervicogenic headache (CGH).
The purpose of the study is to determine the optimal number of chiropractic spinal manipulation treatments for CGH sufferers in regards to clinical and cost-effectiveness. The study will be led by Drs. Mitchell Haas and Gert Bronfort, leaders in the field of chiropractic research.
A total of 256 participants will be randomized to four treatment groups (n = 64/group). All participants will attend 18 sessions with a chiropractor: three visits per week for six weeks. All participants will receive treatment at each visit. The dose levels will be 0, 6, 12, or 18 sessions for manipulation or a light massage alternative.
The grant period is from Aug. 2011 through May 2016.
