Palmer College of Chiropractic recently announced the recipients of the 2024 Palmer College Alumni Awards, given annually to celebrate the achievements of Palmer’s graduates.
The Palmer College Alumni Awards, noted a Palmer press release, publicly recognize inspiring individuals whose exceptional accomplishments, affiliations and careers honor Palmer’s standard of excellence. Four new awards will be given annually in addition to fellowships in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic; fellowship recipients are selected by the Palmer College Board of Trustees.
“Alumni continuously make a difference across the globe and set an example for future generations of Palmer graduates,” said chancellor and 1990 Palmer alumnus Dennis Marchiori, DC, PhD. “This year kicks off a new tradition — one that I hope lives on forever — in which we celebrate and recognize members of our community for their outstanding gifts and contributions to their alma mater, to the chiropractic profession and to society.”
The following are this year’s winners of the Palmer College Alumni Awards:
Distinguished Achievement Award Winner
ANTHONY LISI, DC (’96)
The Distinguished Achievement Award is presented to a Palmer alumnus/alumna who has made exceptional contributions to the field of chiropractic ― offering both vision and accomplishment with professional, societal and/or educational value.
Lisi has been instrumental in transforming health care for veterans by broadening their access to chiropractic services. As the first DC appointed to the medical staff of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, he led the integration of visionary hospital-based chiropractic services and interprofessional clinical education. He currently serves as the National Chiropractic Program Director for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the largest integrated healthcare system in the U.S., where he oversees 200 chiropractic clinics nationwide, with a staff of 235 DCs and more than 400,000 veterans receiving safe, effective, drug-free healthcare.
Additional appointments include Chiropractic Section Chief in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System and Associate Research Scientist and Assistant Professor at the Yale Center for Medical Informatics, Yale School of Medicine. His research focuses on non-pharmacological treatment of spinal conditions.
Lisi was instrumental in establishing and executing the first federally funded chiropractic residency training program in the VA. The residencies, now in their fifth year, provide chiropractic graduates with advanced clinical training in complex cases, knowledge of hospital practices and protocols, and collaborative opportunities with various healthcare professionals in team-based care.
By always striving to elevate the profession and extend the reach of chiropractic care through his tireless work, Lisi embodies the meaning of distinguished achievement.
Distinguished Service Award
MICKEY BURT, DC (’73)
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to an alumnus/alumna who demonstrates exemplary stewardship through specific and meritorious service to and active support of the College. This Palmer College alumni award recognizes longevity, consistency and breadth of service.

He and his wife, Karla, are also steadfast contributors to Palmer College, earning them recognition in the Atlas Society, Founder’s Circle and Sterling Lifetime Giving Society for their loyal philanthropic support of Palmer. Burt’s greatest impact may be felt directly by Palmer students, as he has hosted more than 30 future DCs as preceptors and referred numerous students to Palmer College.
The Burt Clinic of Chiropractic was founded by Burt and Karla 50 years ago this year. The couple and their sons Chad (’01), Brad (’02) and Austin (’12) regularly host groups of students to tour and experience a highly successful practice. His TPI “Body-Swing Connection” seminars have made him one of the most sought-after golf health and fitness speakers. “By restoring normal movement and allowing the nervous system and body to function as it was intended to, most people can live a happy and healthy life,” he says. “We need to keep screaming this from the top of our lungs since too many people forget this simple philosophy.”

SPOTLIGHT ON BRENT YOUNG, DC (’20)
Young is a trailblazer, a lifelong learner and a proud advocate for Palmer College of Chiropractic and the profession. That’s why he is one of 10 alumni who graduated in the past 10 years to receive Palmer’s new 10 Under 10 Alumni Award. Honorees have realized considerable success as professionals, mentors and Palmer ambassadors.
Young grew up in Connecticut and studied kinesiology at the University of Connecticut before finding his way to Palmer West. “I asked a colleague what the best chiropractic college was, and they said, ‘Palmer, hands down,’” says Young. “It was the only place I applied, and I haven’t looked back since.” That forward focus has brought Young considerable success. At Palmer, he became involved with the Veterans Health Administration (VA) system and was drawn to the patients and the integrative setting.
Now, he has become the first DC to be appointed in the North Florida/South Georgia VA system and the first ever Black male DC to earn a full-time appointment at one of the nation’s 170 VA health centers.
“It’s a privilege to serve these veterans and to be part of an amazing medical team at the VA,” said Young. “For some providers, this is the first time they’ve made referrals to a chiropractor. In addition to patient care, I see my role as education and advocacy for the profession. I work to be dependable, approachable and ready to collaborate with every member of our team.”
Young was nominated for this award by Anthony Lisi, DC (’96), chiropractic program director for the Veterans Health Administration and 2024 Palmer College of Chiropractic Distinguished Achievement Award winner. “I’m running out of ways to say thank you to Dr. Lisi,” said Young. “He has been a friend and mentor to me throughout my entire career, and to be nominated by a colleague of his stature is truly humbling. It means the world to me.”
Things aren’t likely to slow down for Young anytime soon. He continues to serve patients at the VA and has recently welcomed a new baby to his family. “There’s not a lot of sleep happening these days,” he laughs. “But my passion for this practice and my patients gives me plenty of energy. I’m going to keep learning, and my ultimate goal is to leave the profession better than I found it.”

GEORGE BLACKWOOD, DC (’49)
Anyone who meets Blackwood knows what an incredibly generous, kind and driven human being he is. He is the patriarch of the Blackwood family’s chiropractic legacy, which has spanned three generations — and will soon enter a fourth. He grew up on his family’s farm in Kansas, where a visit to the town DC spawned a domino effect that resulted in an amazing chiropractic legacy.
After graduating in 1949, Blackwood established a practice in Muscatine, Iowa, caring for his patients for nearly 30 years. Blackwood consistently and proudly attends homecomings, where he always sports his iconic B.J. Palmer necktie. Now in his 100th year, he isn’t stopping. Blackwood has supported his alma mater for decades, and at the Founder’s Circle level since the turn of the century. To honor the Blackwood family legacy at Palmer — which includes his two brothers, Kenneth Blackwood, DC (’50) and Dean Blackwood, DC (’52) — he established a $1 million endowed Opportunity Scholarship.
This fall, his great-grandson will become the next generation of the extended Blackwood family to attend Palmer College.
PAUL LIECHTY, DC (’76)
Liechty’s chiropractic journey started when he was 10 years old with an adjustment from Roy Ottinger, DC (’50) to help with lower-back pain he sustained from carrying milk cans on his father’s farm in North Dakota. A racetrack crash brought him back to that same DC and solidified his destiny to become one himself.
Today, he is the owner of American Integrated Healthcare in Mesquite, Texas. Liechty and his wife Sherri are a “Palmer power couple,” frequently in attendance at Palmer events. Their support, much like their marriage, is unwavering. Through his philanthropy and advocacy, he inspires everyone to get involved. Paul has been recognized as the Top Philanthropist for the Texas Chiropractic Association and has been a member of the Founder’s Circle for over 13 years. When speaking with donors, it’s not uncommon to hear that Liechty helped encourage their support of Palmer College. Not to be outdone by Blackwood, Liechty also proudly sports a B.J. Palmer necktie.
