Public Health Breakthrough: World's First Ultra-Low-Dose X-Ray Imager, 'EOS', Which Reduces Radiation by up to 90% Compared to Conventional X-Rays, is Installed in First U.S. Healthcare Facility

Chiropractic Economics June 12, 2008

biospace med, an emerging medical technology company based in Atlanta, announced today that Eatontown, NJ-based New Jersey Spine Group, LLC, is the first healthcare facility in the United States to install the Company?s FDA-cleared ?EOS? x-ray imager?the world?s first ultra-low-dose x-ray technology. The first EOS installation at a U.S. healthcare facility comes on the heels of a resolution introduced earlier this month in the U.S. House of Representatives, H. Res. 1216, which proposes to reduce radiation dosages used in the imaging of children.

EOS can capture head-to-toe images of patients in a standing, weight-bearing position with a dramatic reduction in radiation dose?up to 10 times less than a conventional x-ray and up to 1000 times less than a CT (Computed Tomography) scan. Additionally, EOS images provide remarkable detail, enabling physicians to better diagnose and plan an effective course of treatment.

EOS can be utilized for patients of all ages, said Gordon D. Donald, III, MD, Managing Member and Director of Spinal Surgery for New Jersey Spine Group. EOS is especially helpful in any situation where patients want to limit their exposure to radiation, and where long-length, weight-bearing images are needed. EOS truly represents breakthrough medical technology, and I believe every healthcare institution in the U.S. that currently images patients with a conventional digital x-ray will want to adopt this remarkable technology as soon as possible. Furthermore, because EOS uses considerably less radiation than a conventional x-ray or CT (Computed Tomography) scan, it is an extremely important advancement for children with pediatric scoliosis, a condition involving a curvature of the spine that usually requires repeated x-ray exams, perhaps as many as 20 to 25 radiological exams during the course of their clinical follow-up.

We are very pleased to announce the first U.S. installation of our ultra-low-dose EOS x-ray imager in one of the leading spine centers in the U.S., added Marie Meynadier, PhD, chief executive officer of biospace med. EOS represents a whole new paradigm for the safe and effective imaging of patients, and we are looking forward to rolling out this revolutionary technology throughout the United States.
