Professional liability insurance—something every chiropractor needs

Chiropractic Economics August 29, 2013

We live in a world of uncertainty, which means you can never be sure what will happen next. As a doctor of chiropractic, working hard to provide the best healthcare possible to your clients, you may not want to think about the potential of a lawsuit disrupting your otherwise happy life. However, being proactive and getting professional liability insurance coverage gives you a way to be more certain of a positive outcome should an unexpected lawsuit be brought against you.

Insurance for chiropractors helps avoid lawsuits.

Professional liability insurance, also known as malpractice insurance, covers you in the event that a client sues you for alleged negligence or wrongdoing on your part as the professional healthcare practitioner. Having malpractice insurance is essential to most healthcare providers, as they work in constant contact with many patients in varying stages of health. While an incident or injury may not be your fault, if you’re not insured, the expense of a lawsuit could potentially put you out of business, or at the very least cause irreparable damage to your reputation.

As a chiropractor, many of your clients may have pre-existing conditions that could become aggravated during or after a treatment or adjustment, which that person may or may not consider your fault. Sometimes clients may not provide full disclosure of their medical histories, which can also lead to any number of issues during a treatment. Even with full disclosure, miscommunications between chiropractor and patient may lead to trouble after the patient leaves the treatment room.

And while less pleasant to consider, it’s possible that you may make a mistake with a client. Even the very best chiropractors may overlook an important detail or cause a purely accidental injury. Regardless of the situation, having professional liability insurance will minimize the overall risks to you, your finances, and your practice. Take the time to do the research when it comes to purchasing your chiropractic insurance. You want the best for yourself, and because having the right type of coverage is so important to every aspect of your practice, it’s worth the up-front effort to get the right components in place. The future may be uncertain, but you can certainly take steps to make sure it’s going to be as good as you can possibly make it.
