February 27, 2012 — The American Chiropractic Association Sports Council recently announced the appointment of Palmer College of Chiropractic West Campus Sports Council President Michael Smith to the position of ACA Sports Council national student liaison.
Smith’s appointment marks the fifth time a West Campus Sports Council president has been appointed to the position since it was created in 2007.
The Sports Council liaison is primarily tasked with bringing the vision of the ACA Sports Council to the national chiropractic colleges. This includes working with other schools to further their programs as well as facilitating the start of new councils. Smith will present a report on student Sports Council activities at the annual ACA Sports Council Symposium, which will take place this year on July 20-22 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
“Receiving this appointment is a great honor and privilege, and it speaks to the profession-wide respect for the West Campus Sports Council program,” said Smith, a 10th Quarter student from Crown Point, Ind., who earned his B.S. (biology) from Indiana University.
“I’m humbled by the fact I get to work with such incredible sports DCs, as well as students from other schools who are also committed to advancing the field of sports chiropractic. I also consider it an honor to follow in the footsteps of past West Campus Sports Council presidents who served in this position.”
Smith says he’s always wanted to pursue a healthcare career, and after exploring different options, he knew that chiropractic was his calling. And since he had a strong interest in working in the sports field, selecting the school best-suited to help him achieve his career goal was an easy choice.
“I knew Palmer’s West Campus was an exceptional chiropractic school with evidence-based teaching and an emphasis on sports chiropractic; plus, moving to California allowed me to enjoy life outside the Midwest,” said Smith, a current member of the West Campus Guides, who served as website coordinator and vice president prior to his appointment as West Sports Council president.
“Mike Smith is a humble, confident, natural leader who will do well as the new ACA Sports Council student liaison,” said Dr. Edward Feinberg, West Campus Sports Council president who also serves as National ACA Student Sports Council Faculty Liaison.
“Last year we helped Bridgeport develop a program, and this year we’ve been informed that National College is developing one as well. We help them with the organization, and give them the benefit of our experience and consultation.”
