April 30, 2014—The Life Chiropractic College West Gladiators seized the Division III Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU) championship by defeating the Reno Zephyrs in a tough-won battle on Treasure Island. This win adds to the Gladiators undefeated record and puts them one step closer to the National Championship.
Although the Gladiators had soundly defeated the Zephyrs twice during the regular season, the Reno men played hard and fast, challenging the Gladiators to the core. The Gladiators toughened their defense to secure a lead at the half. The players’ conditioning made the difference in the second half, controlling the field and leaving the Zephyrs gasping for oxygen.
“It’s awesome to be the NCRFU Division III champions! We want to thank the busload of supporters who made the trek again this weekend to come watch us play. Hearing the fans from the field is an amazing feeling. Their energy helps push us to that next level,” stated TJ Gudilin, Life West student and player.
Elena Sanchez, a Life West student watching for the first time, shared her excitement, “It was an awesome experience. I enjoyed the game and am looking forward to future games. It was really cool to see such fierce competition between the two teams on the field and how they came together as friends afterwards.”
Life West President Brian Kelly, DC, commented, “This was an incredible achievement for a first season team. I congratulate the players, coaches Tez Molloy and Vicki Hudson, and all the support crew. The success of the team to date has brought a lot of awareness to
Life West, and chiropractic. I wish the team all the best during May as they look to win a national championship”.
Assistant coach, Vicki Hudson, was proud of the team effort, “The Gladiators met every challenge the tough Reno squad presented with effective teamwork and selfless play. Winning the NCRFU Division III championship title in their first competitive season is just the beginning for this team.”
The final score of 62 – 17 propels the Gladiators on to Boise, Idaho where they will take on the Pacific Northwest champions, Budd Bay Buffaloes. The winner will continue on to play in the quarter and semi-final rounds May 17-18 in Dallas, TX.
