April 15, 2015 — Foot Levelers is hosting National Distance Running Hall of Famer Dick Beardsley as the nner Dick Beardsley at marathon celebrity guest speaker at the 2015 Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon. Beardsley is a long-time distance runner and now motivational speaker, who founded the Dick Beardsley Foundation to help educate about chemical dependency.
Beardsley gained fame in 1982 with his second place finish to Alberto Salazar at the Boston Marathon. Considered one of the best finishes in any marathon ever run, the ‘Duel in the Sun,’ as it came to be known, propelled Beardsley onto the international distance running stage.
After a series of accidents and injuries, Beardsley fell into a devastating and destructive pattern of prescription drug addiction.
After getting caught by Drug Enforcement Agents in 1996, Beardsley kicked his habit and ever since has been on the speaking circuit, talking “about falling down, getting run over by a truck, and getting back up again. Over and over.”
Foot Levelers is in its third year as the title sponsor of the Blue Ridge Marathon, “America’s Toughest Road Marathon.”
One of a very few running events to take place on National Park Service land, the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon celebrates participation, perseverance, and personal accomplishment.
