Chiropractic Future Strategic Plan (CFSP) has developed and distributed three patient educational flyers aimed at addressing complex and often restrictive health insurance policies.
These resources are designed to help patients better understand and navigate common health insurance related barriers to receiving timely and affordable care. Chiropractic Future focused on three major issues:
The Reality Behind High Copays. Many patients discover their copayments exceed the cost of care due to health insurers setting low reimbursement rates. This results in “phantom benefits,” where coverage exists on paper but provides patients little actual financial relief.
The Impact of Per-Diem Insurance Models. Some health insurers use fixed per-visit reimbursement structures that limit the care that can be provided at each appointment. This forces patients to schedule more office visits and pay additional copays, delaying their recovery and increasing the overall cost.
The Burden of Prior Authorization. Insurance companies often require pre-approval for chiropractic services, leading to unnecessary delays, reduced access to chiropractic care and potential worsening of patients’ health conditions while they wait for authorization.
“These flyers were developed to equip patients with the knowledge and understanding they need to advocate for themselves,” said Kristi Hudson, CFSP Leadership Committee Chairperson. “By understanding how insurance structures affect their access to care, patients can have more informed conversations with their providers, employers and insurance carriers.”
Patients and DCs are encouraged to download, print and utilize these materials to demand coverage that truly supports their healthcare needs.
