Charles DuBois awarded honorary degree from NYCC

Chiropractic Economics Staff April 4, 2012

IMG6632-L1April 4, 2012 — At New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) commencement exercises held March 30, 2012, Charles C. DuBois, president of the whole foods supplement company, Standard Process Inc., was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his generous philanthropy, his business achievement, and for having significantly advanced natural healthcare education, scholarship, and nutritional research.

It is the second such degree conferred in the college’s 90-year history.

During ceremonies recognizing the successful efforts of 42 candidates for Doctor of Chiropractic, graduating student Charles Phelps addressed his class, intoning them to continue learning throughout their careers and challenging them to be the absolute best they can be.

Dubois delivered the commencement address and offered his congratulations to the assembled graduates. Named “Humanitarian of the Year” by the American Chiropractic Association , member of the board for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, and cited for distinguished service to the chiropractic profession, DuBois continues to contribute significantly to the chiropractic profession and to serve organizations charged with helping the community and safeguarding children.

DuBois’ remarks lauded the students for having chosen a profession focused on service to others and changing lives for the better.  He urged them to surround themselves with great people, to hire employees whose values align with their own, and to set an example of hard work and dedication.

“Treat employees as you would your family, and treat your patients as you would your parents,” he said, recommending his audience be ever thankful and reflect daily how they might favorably change someone’s life.  “Be generous — get involved, volunteer your time and support your profession. Be positive — take challenges and turn them into opportunities.”

The ceremonies also honored new inductees into the American College of Chiropractors, an honor society recognizing individuals who advance the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic. Inductees were Ellen M. Coyne, DC (NYCC ’84), past Chair of the Board of the New York Chiropractic Council and current member of the New York State Board for Chiropractic; Mariangela Penna, DC (NYCC ’86), immediate past president of the New York State Chiropractic Association; Michael A. Mestan, DC, MS, Executive Vice President and Provost of NYCC; and Hunter A. Mollin, DC, (NYCC ’87) associate professor of chiropractic clinical sciences at NYCC.
