Claim deadline approaching for UnitedHealth Group settlement

Chiropractic Economics September 27, 2010

September 27, 2010 — The deadline to file a claim in the settlement with UnitedHealth Group is Oct. 5, 2010. In 2000, UnitedHealth Group was sued by the AMA and other medical societies, physicians, and patients regarding the calculation of usual, customary, and reasonable rates (UCR). The UCR database was maintained by Ingenix, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group.

After an investigation, it was determined that UnitedHealth Group underpaid out-of-network physicians by approximately 28 percent. As a result, UnitedHealth Group agreed to pay $350 million to affected providers and patients.

The settlement applies to those who submitted out-of-network claims with UnitedHealth Group and its subsidiaries (Oxford Health Plans, Golden Rule Insurance, Mid Atlantic Medical Services and PacificCare Health Systems) between March 15, 1994 and Nov. 18, 2009. For documents and further information regarding filing a claim, go to www.uniteducrsettlement.com.
