To make attending graduate school more attainable and provide more students with the opportunity to become leaders in health care, Northeast College of Health Sciences (formerly New York Chiropractic College – NYCC) has prioritized building strong educational partnerships with colleges across the country.
These partnerships, which take the form of articulation agreements, allow Northeast College to collaborate with undergraduate institutions and provide pathways for students to secure admission to Northeast’s Doctor of Chiropractic and Master of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition programs. As part of the College’s strategic enrollment management plan, the goal is that these relationship-building efforts will lead to increased recruitment opportunities, ultimately generating increased enrollment.
Why articulation agreements matter
Each articulation agreement with a partnering college is unique and includes detail regarding the admissions process, prerequisites, specific coursework, and required GPA needed to guarantee admission to Northeast College. The agreements often save students significant time and money, in some instances allowing students to earn both degrees a full year more quickly than it would take to earn the degrees individually. With guided support students are also able to avoid spending time and money on unnecessary coursework.
Over the past year, Northeast College has expanded its articulation footprint to include agreements with institutions in New York State including SUNY Cortland, St. John Fisher College, and Nazareth College, as well colleges and universities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The College has also increased the average number of programs per partner. As of Spring 2021, Northeast College had nearly 40 partner institutions, with close to 60 articulated programs, and more in the works.
Seamless and assured transition
Part of Northeast College’s overall commitment to powerfully prepare its students, the partnerships ensure a seamless and successful path of acceptance into the College’s in-demand health care programs. Demonstrating similar values as Northeast College, SUNY Potsdam, known for its challenging liberal arts and sciences core as well as excellence in teacher training, has a partnership with Northeast College that includes four articulation agreements.
“SUNY Potsdam is proud to partner with [Northeast College of Health Sciences, formerly] New York Chiropractic College. This agreement formalizes a direct pathway to further study for our students interested in chiropractic and enables an effective transition from our undergraduate programs to the [Northeast College of Health Sciences, formerly] NYCC Doctor of Chiropractic program,” said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. Kristin G. Esterberg. “The relationship between both institutions allows us to offer seamless advising and support, to ensure our students are successful and prepared for fulfilling health careers.”
Northeast College President Michael Mestan, DC, said the College community is excited to collaborate with such exceptional educational institutions and welcome their students to Northeast College’s health care programs. “Providing a path to guaranteed admission to our graduate programs is an important way we are helping open the door of academic opportunity to more students,” said Mestan. “By providing simplified and practical options for admission, we allow our students to better focus on their education and becoming exceptional health care professionals.”
Partners in providing students opportunity and support
The College offers two articulation tracks: the 4+ 3 articulation track and the 3+3 articulation track. Both allow students in a variety of bachelor’s degree programs — including biochemistry, natural sciences, and health sciences — to secure their admission to the Northeast College program of their choice.
In addition to providing students with a sense of security on their path toward a graduate degree, the 4+3 articulation track lets students complete an undergraduate degree at a partner institution and gain acceptance to Northeast College when requirements are met.
The 3+3 articulation track saves students the cost of one year of tuition by allowing students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and Northeast College graduate degree a full year more quickly than it would take to earn the degrees individually. With either track, students start their path to Northeast College by submitting a Letter of Intent, signed by their undergraduate advisor.
SUNY Potsdam and Northeast College recently signed agreements offering both the 4+3 and 3+3 articulation tracks to Potsdam’s biology and exercise science students. “This is a great fit for SUNY Potsdam students, as [Northeast College, formerly] NYCC shares a deep commitment to applied learning and clinical experience,” said SUNY Potsdam Department of Public Health and Human Performance Chair Tanya Hewitt. “We know that our students will progress into a program that values hands-on learning and boasts instruction from some of the top practitioners in the country.”
