July 28, 2017—Chiropractic in Texas had never faced a greater threat, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent on legal representation to defend the profession in the Lone Star State and beyond. While some major decisions have gone our way, the fight is not over. A look back: The agenda to take away chiropractors’ rights to diagnose, treat neurological conditions, and partner with other healthcare professionals, among other disturbing efforts, failed to pass in the 85th Texas legislative session. This was thanks in large part to the blood, sweet, tears—and incredible financial generosity—of a number of organizations, including the Texas Chiropractic Association, Parker University, Texas Chiropractic College, plus a number of committed individual donors and supporters.
The battle continues: But while these victories were hard-won, the battle is not over. A civil suit filed by the Texas Medical Association against the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners challenges the right of DCs to evaluate and treat neurological conditions (including subluxations). “So the battlefield moves from the statehouse to the courtroom,” writes William Morgan in Chiropractic Economics (Chiropractic Wins Big in Texas Legislative Session).
