Monolaurin, also known as glycerol monolaurate, is the medium-chain fatty acid lauric acid bound to glycerin and can act as a lipid-based surfactant that disrupts biofilms. While coconut oil is rich in lauric acid in the triglyceride form, monolaurin shows much more activity when the two were compared in a scientific study.
