AHPA adopts trade recommendation for labeling animal products

August 7, 2008 — At its most recent meeting, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) Board of Trustees added a trade recommendation to the association’s Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.

AHPA recommends that products intended for ingestion by animals:

1.                            If intended to provide nutritional value, be labeled in accordance with Association of American Feed Control Officials [AAFCO] guidelines.

2.                            That all other such products be labeled in a manner that discloses all ingredients, states the quantity of each ingredient or proprietary blend, lists ingredients in a proprietary blend in order of predominance, and further, that this policy does not apply to homeopathic products.

This recommendation goes into effect on Jan. 17, 2009.
