Using foot orthotics to aid spine alignment

Brandi Schlossberg June 5, 2014

In too many cases, a chiropractor may work to align the spine of his or her clients, only to have that alignment pushed back out of place due to other issues going on in the client’s body.

For example, if a person has ankles that are not aligned, this could lead the spine right back into misalignment. The bottom line here is that a chiropractor may be able to better serve his or her clients when other measures are in place to help ensure that spine alignment lasts and continues to improve with time.

Common methods of working to keep the spine in alignment following an adjustment include massage therapy, temperature therapy and prescribing the client specific exercises and stretches. Another way in which wellness professionals can help promote and maintain spine alignment among clients is through the use of foot orthotics, which are inserts that can be tailored to the client’s foot in order to provide structure and support for optimal function.

Foot orthotics may be sold right off the shelf or customized for each client, depending on the issues presented. It is important for the chiropractor to be able to assess the biomechanical function of the client’s entire body, including the way in which the client walks and moves.

Such an evaluation, coupled with a thorough intake and open communication, should reveal whether a person is plagued by any foot-related issues that could be affecting the proper alignment of the spine.
If a person has feet that overpronate, or roll inward to an unhealthy degree, then foot orthotics could be prescribed in order to keep the feet in the proper biomechanical position during standing, walking and all other such movements. By correcting the client’s overpronation, changes should then begin to be seen throughout the entire body, including the alignment of the spine.

If a client presents with foot-related issues, take steps to see whether he or she would benefit from the use of foot orthotics. By taking such measures, chiropractors can feel more confident that they are offering their clients lasting results.
