“Really Private Offices” Protect Data At Rest

Chiropractic Economics April 18, 2008

Unattended Data Endpoints such as Laptops and Removable Memory Devices containing Intellectual Property or Confidential Information which may be lost or stolen are protected by Tychi Systems’ “Always Locked” BioKnob and BioLever Locks.

Tychi Systems Inc. of Salem New Hampshire has enhanced the features of it’s biometric locks to provide added protection for the expansive issue of Data Loss Prevention.

The “Always Locked but Never Locked Out” feature allows businesses and corporations to provide a first line of defense against lost and stolen devices which contain sensitive information by securing the areas where they are stored or left unattended.

According to the Ponemon Institute and Vontu, “U.S. Survey: Confidential Data at Risk Survey”, “Breaches of personal data have reached pandemic proportions…….As regulators and businesses scrutinize the issue, it has become increasingly apparent that insiders present the largest security threat to any organization’s most sensitive data. Yet the large majority of reported insider data breaches are inadvertent, the result of a combination of factors: Employee negligence, broken business processes, and ready access to a range of company and employee data that flows easily both within and beyond the four walls of the enterprise.”

The Survey goes on to say, “2006 saw a continuous stream of publicity focused on data breaches caused by laptop theft. Perhaps no single event galvanized the risks of having confidential data on a mobile device as the theft of a Department of Veterans Affairs employee laptop containing sensitive personal information on 26.5 million veterans. That single event spawned a flood of follow-on reports highlighting laptop incidents as well as investigations, studies and data revealing alarming trends.

81 percent of companies surveyed reported the loss of one or more laptop computers containing sensitive information during the previous 12 months.

The FBI reported that 97 percent of stolen computers are never recovered.

Of the total data breaches in 2006, the majority (36%) were due to the loss of a laptop
or computer. Although laptops are a clear threat to data security, some sources believe they are only the tip of the iceberg. According to the Ponemon Institute, PDAs and laptops ranked highest among storage devices posing the greatest risk for sensitive corporate data, followed by USB memory sticks, desktop systems, and shared file servers.”

In total, the survey says that nearly 60% of data breaches are the result of these lost or stolen data endpoints.

With this information in mind, Tychi Systems has incorporated the feature that always locks the door when closed from the outside, never locks it from the inside and since it requires your unique biometric characteristics to open it, will never unintentionally lock you out.

According to Tychi’s President, Sheng Deng. “We provide a small but crucial step in any good data protection plan. When an employee leaves his or her work area for any reason, their work product will be protected against inadvertant or intentional intrusion.”

He went on to say, “We manage people not their credentials. If you leave your office unattended, it will be locked and available only to people who have authorized access. If you encounter a problem, you then check your access logs to see who entered your space. With our technology, you will be certain of the identity of the person who gained access.”

He finished with, “We protect your Data End Points by insuring that your Private Office really is Private!”
