Metagenics’ product helps manage symptoms of functional bowel discomfort

Chiropractic Economics August 2, 2011

August 2, 2011 — A recent clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroentology found that a probiotic combination of strains can significantly improve symptoms associated with functional bowel discomfort.

The probiotic combination, found in Metagenics’ Ultra Flora Plus DF supplement, could have a considerable impact on the quality of life for a number of people affected by these problems.

In the clinical trial, Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCFM strain) strain and the Bifidobacterium lactis (Bi-07) strain improved symptoms of abdominal bloating in patients with functional bowel issues, the most common gastrointestinal (GI) complaint.

Metagenics, a nutrigenomics and lifestyle medicine company focused on improving health, developed Ultra Flora Plus DF with a probiotic (“good” bacteria) supplement containing pure strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis.

“Over 10 million people are treated each year for gastrointestinal (GI) complaints and the total health care costs exceed $40 billion annually,” said Jacob J. Kornberg, MD, FACS, director of professional & clinical services at Metagenics Inc. “The symptoms of GI disorders can cause discomfort and patients are unable to fully enjoy their lives.”

One in four Americans suffer from GI issues, including occasional constipation, bloating and cramping. GI issues such as these are those in which the bowel looks normal, but the nerves or muscles of the digestive tract do not function properly.

Unhealthy diets, low consumption of fiber, stress, use of medications and not enough exercise are some of the primary causes that can disrupt the body’s natural balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria. As a result, these factors affect digestion, waste elimination, immune health and the protective lining along the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms generally include occasional heartburn, abdominal discomfort, mild nausea, occasional constipation, occasional loose stools and bloating.

“Bloating is the second most bothersome GI complaint and is one of the top three reasons patients seek medical care,” said Dr. Kornberg. “Metagenics’ Ultra Flora Plus DF and other probiotic formulas manage GI symptoms and improve a patient’s general well-being.”
