Katie Sam, DC, of AlignLife Wauwatosa complements transplant care with chiropractic care

Chiropractic Economics Staff June 23, 2014

wauwatosa-chiropractorJune 23, 2014 — While chiropractic care is ideal for low back pain and other neuro-muscular issues, research, as well as first-hand experience, is illustrating that it is also a key element in other acute health issues. Katie Sam, DC, has learned this from personal experience; her son was born with a rare and life-threatening disease, biliary atresia.

Typically, the biliary system drains bile from the liver into the intestines. In infants that are diagnosed with biliary atresia, the flow of bile from the liver to the gallbladder is blocked. In Sam’s son’s case, he was born with no gallbladder and no bile duct. At 8 months old, her son received a liver transplant.

The functioning of his nervous system needed to be optimal after his surgeries to allow for proper and timely healing. The nervous system is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves. The brain is protected by the skull and the nerves are protected by the spine. Because the spine is moveable, the bones in the spine can shift out of place, which then puts pressure on the nerve and causes dysfunction in the body — this is called a subluxation.

Subluxations in people not dealing with life-threatening illnesses or surgery can cause a range of symptoms, or they can be “silent” and there are no symptoms. Because of the immense challenges in children with critical health situations, chiropractic care is essential.

Children who spend weeks to even months in the hospital typically are hooked up to machines with tubes and wires for 24 hours a day, which makes it difficult to move around. Subluxations in kids are caused by falling as they learn to walk, bumping their head, or falling off their bike. Kids who spend a lot of time in the hospital, however, spend a lot of time lying on their back, going in and out of surgeries, and hooked up to machines all day.

Their subluxations are usually caused by stress and chemicals, as well as inactivity. Sam said that with a properly functioning nervous system, the body is able to do what it is supposed to and these kids have a much better chance of healing when their nervous system is free from interference.

Sam is now on a mission to offer as much integrated care as possible for children with critical conditions. She, along with AlignLife, is working on educating the masses on chiropractic and natural health care.

AlignLife hosts monthly free webinars and the clinics nationwide host on site clinics on everything from allergies to cholesterol. These doctors and their staffs want to make sure every single person has access to the knowledge they need to take control of their health. Every third Wednesday, the Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, clinic offers a ChiroKids day, which allows children to be screened at no charge.

Today, Sam’s son is healthy and happy not only because he had a liver transplant, but also because of the chiropractic care he has had since birth. By checking his spine for nerve interference and providing specific chiropractic adjustments when necessary, he has been able to heal faster and build his immune system.
