The future of curcumin resides in innovation

Christina DeBusk March 30, 2017

Take a look at curcumin absorption to optimize your patients' results

Sponsored by TruGen3

Curcumin provides a number of health-related benefits.

In fact, one article published in The AAPS Journal, the official journal of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, shares how research has connected this particular substance with having “promising effects” for individuals with a variety of pro-inflammatory health conditions.

Because of these types of positive effects, many healthcare professionals recommend that their patients take some type of curcumin supplement. For example, on November 1, 2016, Andrew Weil, MD, posted on his blog (which has more than three million page views and 650,000 newsletter subscribers per month) that he often recommends that patients with these types of conditions take curcumin—“the most active constituent of turmeric”—daily.

Furthermore, while Weil also suggests that the curcumin be taken with black pepper to aid with absorption, there is something else that can help your body make better use of this particular substance as well.

It’s a fairly new technology called VESIsorb and it’s changing the way our bodies make use of supplements entirely.

Why absorption is an issue

A lot of people look at a supplement bottle, at the amount of nutrients it contains, and just assume that whatever amount of goodness is in the pill, tablet, powder, or oil will automatically be absorbed by their bodies, providing them 100 percent of the supplement’s contained value. Sadly, this isn’t the case.

For instance, the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements offers a Vitamin B12 Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet which states that, “Approximately 56 percent of a 1 mcg oral dose of vitamin B12 is absorbed, but absorption decreases drastically when the capacity of intrinsic factor is exceeded (at 1-2 mcg of vitamin B12).” This means that almost half of this particular supplement goes unused, and that’s best case scenario.

In “The Myth of the One-A-Day Multivitamin,” an article posted on the BW School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ website, Scott Olson, MD, shares a similar sentiment. Specifically, Olson talks about how “for a great many people the liver is unable to convert or activate some of the most essential nutrients” which exist in inactive forms of certain supplements. Thus, you can take it, but it won’t necessarily help you because your body may not be able to break it down into its most usable parts and pieces in order to absorb it entirely.

This is where VESIsorb comes in.

VESIsorb, the absorption solution

VESIsorb is a patented delivery system that closely mimics the body’s natural digestive process, thereby making it easier to break down supplements like curcumin so your body can use them more easily. It does this by turning the nutrient into small droplets call colloids (which, incidentally, are so small that you cannot see them without the help of a microscope or similar device).

These are used more easily by the body, resulting in higher absorption levels and, subsequently, less nutritional waste.

Another important function of VESIsorb is that it overcomes the obstacles often associated with fat-soluble supplements. These tend to be harder for the body to break down and use, that is, unless they are taken with some type of fat. But VESIsorb changes that, in that it allows fat soluble compounds to more easily mix with water.  Think of milk – where the fat droplets are emulsified in the watery portion of milk.

Think oil and water…and chocolate milk

To help you better understand how VESIsorb works, think of regular curcumin supplements as containing oil and water. The ingredients don’t mix together, thus making them harder for your body to use as they remain separated, so it has to digest them both individually. VESIsorb, on the other hand, is more like chocolate milk. All ingredients mix together to create the perfect concoction of ready-to-use goodness.

One additional benefit of the VESIsorb system is that it can be customized to the active ingredient or group of ingredients. Thus, when a curcumin supplement specifically is created with this type of technology, it results in higher absorption rates than when compared to the same type of supplements not created with this technology.

And because more of the curcumin is absorbed by the body, it results in greater levels of health. How can you beat that?
