Here are the Top 5 most-popular COVID-19 articles of 2022 …
Vitamin D, additional supplementation strategies, and treatment of long-haul patients were the most-read articles regarding COVID-19 on the Chiropractic Economics website and social media channels in 2022, with wellness chiropractors seeing an uptick in long-haul COVID-19 patients with new symptoms and ongoing issues.
“Some 37% of COVID-19 patients are likely to develop long haul COVID symptoms,” wrote DC and wellness practitioner Robert Silverman. “In my experience to date, I believe that number is already higher — and will go higher still. We’re seeing a precipitous rise in new medical conditions among COVID-19 survivors. Long-haulers syndrome may portend a secondary epidemic following on the heels of the current pandemic. Practitioners need to understand the multifaceted causes of long-haulers syndrome and be equipped to support their patients with a multi-pronged approach.”
Vitamin D came to the forefront over the course of 2022 as research pointed to connections between low vitamin D levels and heightened COVID severity.
“In a review, 54 studies were included with a total of 1,403,715 subjects,” Christina Debusk wrote. “It found that several of these studies connected vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency not only with COVID infection, but also with an increase in hospitalization, ICU admission, mortality, and reinfection rate of COVID-19.”

5. Coronavirus and a long haul COVID treatment protocol
BY ROBERT G. SILVERMAN, DC, DACBN, DCBCN, MS, CCN, CNS, CSCS, CIISN, CKTP, CES, HKC, FAKTR
As the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, the number of survivors with long-hauler’s syndrome, and patients in need of a long haul COVID treatment protocol, continues to rise at an unexpected rate. The CDC defines long-hauler’s syndrome — also known as PASC (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2) or long COVID — as a wide range of new, returning or ongoing health problems people experience after first being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
4. OPINION: Does vitamin D help with COVID? Yes, and it needs increased media coverage
BY PAUL VARNAS, DC, DACBN
Testing for vitamin D and using it as a supplement can be an effective strategy to prevent COVID patients from having serious complications (or protecting the uninfected from having a serious case). Many doctors have incorporated it into their treatment plans. It would be nice if the media would focus on this issue.
3. Treatment for long COVID: supplementation, oxygenation, and suggested treatment modalities
BY JEFFREY TUCKER, DC
Coronavirus can stymie any organ and tissue in the body, especially the lungs. Chiropractic treatment for long COVID must support the heart and lungs, and restore healthy breathing. Spend time teaching patients powerful breathing methods; use your hands and modalities that improve circulation and movement of lymph in the body, and help clear toxins and carbon dioxide from the body. I look for procedures and methods to improve oxygenation to the cells.
2. Strategies and protocols for long haul COVID symptoms
BY ROBERT G. SILVERMAN, DC, DACBN, DCBCN, MS, CCN, CNS, CSCS, CIISN, CKTP, CES, HKC, FAKTR
Among post-COVID-19 patients we are seeing a tremendous rise in new medical issues and conditions. Effective strategies and protocols for treating long-hauler patients are critical. My protocol focuses on calming systemic inflammation through a multi-pronged approach, including dietary modifications, nutritional support, resolving gut dysbiosis and intestinal permeability, and improved sleep. At the same time, underlying inflammation needs to be addressed.
1. New research regarding low vitamin d in patients and infection and reinfection rate of COVID-19
BY CHRISTINA DEBUSK
After analyzing the data, researchers noted that individuals testing negative for SARS-Co-V-2 had mean vitamin D levels of 17.7 ng/mL. However, the mean vitamin D levels for those testing positive was more than three points lower, or 14.1 ng/mL. Thus, the researchers concluded that “low serum vitamin D levels are statistically associated with the risk of COVID-19.”
