Chiropractic Economics Buyers Guide: Advanced laser and chiropractic electrotherapy

Chiropractic electrotherapy can release endorphins, the body’s own natural painkillers, and includes TENS machines and electrical nerve stimulators

There are accounts of electrical stimulation therapy dating as far as the late 18th century, and it is most commonly recognized as a treatment for various neurological disorders. Although the exact mechanism behind chiropractic electrotherapy in treating joint pain is not fully understood, the basics are that when electrical stimulation is applied to specifically targeted areas of the body, the pain signals going along the nerves are blocked. Electrotherapy is also thought to release endorphins, the body’s own natural painkillers.

TENS machines, or electrical nerve stimulators, are fairly common and have models for use in a practice or at home. They are relatively inexpensive and have an analgesic effect, reducing pain. Interferential current, also known as interferential therapy (IFT), alternates between two frequencies and allows for the stimulation to reach deep tissue with less discomfort than with a single low frequency from a TENS unit.

Galvanic Stimulation (GS) applies a direct electrical current to the area being treated, most frequently used in the case of acute injuries and major tissue damage.

Laser, chiropractic electrotherapy success in your practice

The major benefits of adding laser therapy to your practice include: increased patient flow, increased cash flow, staying
competitive in the market, and diversifying the conditions you can treat while optimizing outcomes.

Reviewing your patient demographics is essential for determining how laser therapy can be best applied within your practice and will help you get a better understanding of what their treatment goals will be. Your patients need to understand how laser therapy can optimize their care, so marketing the technology to them should be a priority.

Marketing your new services

Marketing materials in the form of in-office pamphlets and brochures, direct-mailing campaigns, email blasts and social media posts can help to spread the word to your patients about this noninvasive, low-risk treatment laser or chiropractic electrotherapy options for their maladies.

Have your staff emphasize that laser therapy or chiropractic electrotherapy has been shown to be very effective for reducing pain, inflammation and swelling, and patients new to laser therapy will become reoccurring patients.
