October 20, 2010 — The trend of Clevelanders in service to the profession continues as Cleveland Chiropractic College-Los Angeles (CCCLA) student Heidi Henson was named the Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) National Legislative Chair at the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Annual House of Delegates (HOD) meeting Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in Newport, R.I.
Individuals seeking the office had to complete an application packet and submit a letter of intent. At the HOD meeting, applicants gave a speech, participated in a question-and-answer session and were interviewed by their SACA peers. SACA executive members then weighed all of the criteria and made their selection. Though the process was lengthy, Henson is ready to handle the tasks associated with her new post.
“I will be working hand in hand with the ACA legislative committee to make sure SACA is doing all it can to support the advocacy efforts of the ACA,” Henson said. “One of my main duties is facilitating the legislative efforts of SACA students at the National Chiropractic Legislative Conference held annually in Washington, D.C., in February.”
Although many Americans are facing economic concerns, the future of healthcare remains on the forefront of many minds. Such is the case with Henson, who looks to the coming years with great anticipation.
“This is such an exciting time because the healthcare system in the U.S. is about to change drastically,” Henson said. “I am excited to see students getting involved in supporting issues that have the potential to raise chiropractic to its rightful place as the premiere healthcare field in the U.S. Our actions now will determine our legacy.”
In addition to Henson, several other Clevelanders were also recognized at HOD. CCCKC’s Therese Finan, now serving SACA as immediate past president, received one of three “Excellence in Leadership” awards. Others from the College were the recipients of the “Outstanding Service Award.” Those honored were Mark T. Wade, Jeremy Kobler, Sarah Potthoff and Kathryn M. Decker, all from Cleveland-KC. The SACA chapter at CCCKC also shared “Chapter of the Year” honors with Northwestern University of Health Sciences.
