December 9, 2011 — Suburban, a community newspaper in New Jersey, recently highlighted the work of American Chiropractic Association (ACA) member Dr. Ira A. Shapiro at the 2011 Pan Am Games.
Shapiro was chosen from hundreds of applicants by the Federation Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport to serve on the Pam Am Games medical staff. The staff was responsible for the care of nearly 6,000 competitors representing 42 separate countries during the event.
Shapiro treated athletes competing in taekwondo, judo, and wrestling, many of whom participated in as many as 50 matches in a single day. He treated an array of sports-related traumas from abrasions, sprains and contusions to a severe spinal injury suffered by one of the competitors.
“This was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had as a sports chiropractor,” said Shapiro.
