Foot orthotics benefit diabetics

Brandi Schlossberg March 2, 2014

For people with diabetes, finding ways to manage the chronic condition can be vital to maintaining the best possible health. The poor circulation that can be an all too common issue among diabetics can lead to serious health issues, because it can make it tough for wounds to heal. Therefore, it can be a wise idea to take certain steps to help prevent these wounds from occurring in the first place.

Any wound that occurs on the feet of a person with diabetes can be particularly worrisome. When these wounds fail to heal, amputation may be the final solution. The best defense against this outcome is to prevent foot wounds from happening in the first place. This is where foot orthotics can come into play and provide big benefits for people with diabetes and poor circulation.

When a person wears shoes that may be uncomfortable because they don’t fit quite right, it is all too easy to develop a sore or blister from the rubbing of the shoe on the foot. Foot orthotics for diabetics are designed to provide ultimate comfort and prevent the friction that could lead to a wound that will not heal. Made with materials that breathe well, these inserts or special shoes can help to offer more support and a better overall fit.

If you have a client who has only recently been diagnosed with diabetes, helping that individual figure out the best possible footwear may help ensure that no problematic wounds develop. For those diabetics who already may be suffering from a loss of sensation in their feet, foot orthotics can become an extremely important component of their care.

The proper foot orthotics can also help to stabilize the feet and ankles of the diabetic, further preventing the danger of friction. Therefore, if you are treating a diabetic who is looking to avoid the chronic wounds that could lead to amputation, looking into the benefits of foot orthotics may be a step in the right direction.
