New mattress fireproofing rules to take effect July 1
New federal regulations on mattress flameproofing are set to go into effect July 1. According to Mark Strobel, president of Strobel Technologies and director of People for Clean Beds, mattresses bought after July 1 pose a risk to consumers, but chiropractors can help them.
Doctors — including chiropractors — can prescribe toxin-free mattresses, said Strobel.
Strobel says the health risk is real. Materials used to flameproof mattresses include such toxins as boric acid, acrimony, and decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO). “Even new crib mattresses now contain five pounds of these poisons, and the safety has never been studied,” he says.
He said there are no labeling requirements to list the chemicals used in fireproofing mattresses.
“Your patients will never know what they are sleeping in and absorbing every night … You can help inform them of this risk.”
