Average MD compensation revealed

How much did the average general practitioner (GP) make in 2006? According to the just-released productivity survey from Medical Economics (ME), the median average income of GPs was $140,000, while the median income of all primary-care physicians was $165,000.

The survey also showed that doctors in groups or partnerships earned significantly more than solo practitioners, with those in larger practices generally earning more than those in smaller group practices.

Primary-care physicians include general practitioners, family practitioners, internists, pediatricians, an OB/GYNs, according to ME. Total compensation was defined as “earnings after tax-deductible expenses but before income taxes” for unincorporated physicians. For those in professional corporations, it was defined as “the sum of salary, bonuses, and retirement/profit-sharing contributions made on their behalf.”

The survey was published in the Nov. 16 issue of the magazine.
